- Unfortunately 6 oarsmen on the previous Lifeboat, Victoria, were not powerful enough for the strong currents, they failed to reach a ship in trouble and 7 of its crewmen lost their lives. Victoria was replaced by Victoria 2, a larger boat with 10 oarsmenBy now, there are 3,000 RNLI crew around the country. All crew are issued with Lifejackets for the first time
