On Wednesday, 1 April 2026, at 11.43am HM Coastguard requested the launch of Exmouth’s inshore lifeboat, RNLI relief lifeboat D-887 Dorothy and Katherine Barr lll, to reports of a paddle boarder in trouble near Budleigh Salterton.

The lifeboat was quickly launched and made best speed to the location of the casualty. On arriving at the location the paddle boarder was in fact a spear fisherman who was in no danger. The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station where it was washed down and refuelled ready for te next shout. These shouts are classed as calls with good intent.
