At 14.44 HM Coastguard requested the launch of our ILB, George Bearman II, to reports of a swimmer being taken out to sea by the tide off Coryton Cove. At 14.52 HM Coastguard also requested the launch of our ALB, R and J Welburn, only for her to be stood down just as she approached the shoreline as it was determined the object in the water was a pot buoy, not a swimmer, and our lifeboats were not required.
This is what we refer to as a false alarm with good intent. We are always ready to go when concerns are raised by members of the public about people in difficulty in the sea. We thank the public for their concerns and for doing the right thing, #Calling999AndAskingForCoastguard.
Both lifeboats were returned to the station, washed down and re-fuelled, ready for the next shout.
Our thanks to RNLI Teignmouth and Dawlish Coastguard for another great piece of teamwork.
