Exmouth RNLI were tasked on Thursday 4 June at 9:12hrs by H.M. Coastguard, launching our inshore, D-class lifeboat, George Bearman II, shortly after. Our volunteer crew of three headed off in windy conditions, generating 2 metre swells, towards the reported location of the incident in the Exe estuary.
Two teenage females were located on the railway embankment near Lympstone Beach, where they had retreated to when the rising tide, which peaked at 09:35hrs, caused them to become cut off. The Exmouth RNLI lifeboat crew helped them from the embankment, recovered them to the charity’s lifeboat, and took them to Lympstone Harbour where they were handed over to the Coastguard Rescue Team.
Our inshore lifeboat returned to the station, was washed down and refuelled, ready for the next tasking.
There are a number of locations along the Exe estuary, including Lympstone Beach, that can become cut off at times of high water. It is always important to check tide times before setting out and carry a means of communication, should you find yourself in difficulty. Remember, if you or someone else needs assistance on the coast, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
