Exmouth RNLI tow angling boat to safety
At 2.46pm on Sunday 9 September, Brixham coastguards tasked Exmouth all-weather lifeboat Margaret Jean to the aid of a fishing boat in Lyme Bay. The six-man volunteer crew towed the 25 foot angling vessel back to Teignmouth.
The boat was 11 miles south east of Exmouth with two people on board. The engine would not start due to an electrical problem. The volunteer crew reached the boat at 3.20pm and towed it to Jubilee pontoon, its home port in Teignmouth. Henry Mock, 17 was picked at the last minute to be part of an RNLI team to provide safety cover during the Paralympic sailing events. The volunteers from around the UK started their duties at Weymouth and Portland on 22 August to oversee competitors’ practise races.
Henry is currently studying for a Level 3 National Diploma in Land-based Technology at Bicton College. He joined Exmouth RNLI in December 2011 first becoming a member of the shore crew, the charity’s volunteers on the beach who launch and recover the all-weather lifeboat, Margaret Jean. Henry is currently undertaking crew training and still in his first year, has already qualified as one of the youngest Head Launchers for the charity that saves lives at sea, throughout the UK.Exmouth RNLI host a very busy bank holiday open day
Despite a wet and windy bank holiday Saturday, over 400 visitors came through the big wooden doors at Exmouth RNLI boathouse on 25 August. Crew volunteers gave up their holiday time to give informative talks and tours around the charity’s lifeboats. Volunteers from the fundraising guild ran stalls which raised over £850 for the station.
Visitors were shown aboard both the all-weather Mersey class lifeboat Margaret Jean and the B class inshore lifeboat George Bearman which was moved onto the ramp for the event. Members of the RNLI sea-safety team were available to talk to throughout the day, bringing along their road-show lifeboat Evelyn M.
Exmouth RNLI volunteer’s Eddystone pursuit
Volunteer Deputy Launching Authority, Dave Ashman has raised £570 for Exmouth RNLI made up from sponsorship and prize money. He was also part of a South West RNLI team of five boats which finished second and raised a total of £8,081 for the charity that saves lives at sea.
In his Trapper 300 named Sun Trapper, Dave and two other crew members began the sailing race at 9.30am on Saturday 18 August from Plymouth. 72 boats took part in the 26 mile return course to Hand Deeps Buoy, off Eddystone Rocks. Sun Trapper came tenth overall and won £225 in prize money. The rest of the donation comprised of pledged sponsorship through the internet, the RNLI shop and the Exe Sailing Club.Exmouth RNLI rescue diabetic with chest pains aboard fishing vessel
Brixham coastguard tasked the charity’s all-weather life boat, Margaret Jean at 9.40am on Sunday 5 August. A 22 year old diabetic man was experiencing chest pains and vomiting aboard a commercial fishing vessel 11 miles east of Straight Point in Lyme Bay.
Using the on-board VHF radio, a colleague of the casualty had contacted a Doctor for advice to which an “immediate evacuation” order was given. Margaret Jean was launched at 9.57am with a crew of five plus Coxswain, into moderate weather conditions with heavy rain showers.Exmouth RNLI volunteers tow yacht to safety
The Exmouth all-weather lifeboat, Margaret Jean was tasked at 5.59pm on Thursday 2 August following emergency calls to Portland Coastguard. There had been sightings of a yacht in difficulties to the east of Otter Ledge at Budleigh Salterton.
One of the calls to the coastguard had been from the Skipper’s partner who had reported that he was suffering from severe sea-sickness and needed assistance. Portland Coastguard tasked Exmouth RNLI in-shore lifeboat George Bearman at 6.49pm on 1 August to assist in the rescue of two holidaymakers. The two casualties were rescued approximately two hours later with the help of RNLI volunteers, three coastguard teams and a Royal Navy 193 Sea King helicopter.
The 70 year old man and his seven year old grandson were making their way back from the western end of Budleigh Salterton beach to Sandy Bay holiday park when they were unexpectedly cut off by the high spring tide. Exmouth RNLI Sea Sunday service blessed by sunshine on St. Swithin’s Day
Exmouth RNLI held their annual Sea Sunday service on 15 July at the boathouse on Queens Drive. Reverend James Hutchings, Priest-in-charge Littleham-cum-Exmouth with Lympstone Mission Community took the service for his first time, leading prayers and hymns for those who work and live by the sea.
Around 150 people attended the 30 minute service, attracting many beach visitors throughout the duration.
