Competition winner Darcey Greenland, 11 has designed a new flavour of Italian ice-cream to help boost funds for the launch and recovery vehicle appeal at Exmouth RNLI.

The month-long competition was run by Antonio’s Italian ice-cream (gelato) parlour for Bassett’s Farm primary school and the winner was revealed yesterday, 24 March. 50 school children took part and their drawings are displayed proudly on the counter. Every sale of the winning flavour will contribute at least 10p, by suggested donation, to the appeal at Exmouth RNLI.

Darcey’s Doughnut Delight was picked from a shortlist of four, the other finalists were: Jaffa Snap, Cherry Bakewell and Bassett’s Cream Tea. Owner, Tony Badcott chose Darcey’s flavour for simplicity, texture and appearance in the display cabinet. This winning flavour is made from a recipe of vanilla gelato, jam doughnuts and strawberry sauce. This and all the other flavours in the Italian ice-cream parlour in The Strand, Exmouth; are made by hand to a traditional method on the premises.

Darcey was given a 5-litre tub of her creation to take home and enjoy with her family.

Tony opened the gelato bar in October and was inspired by his late Italian mother, a life-long supporter of the charity that saves lives at sea. He invited crew and fundraising volunteers with their families, to a tasting evening before opening to the public. On SOS Day this January, he handed over £200 generated by weekly promotions and donations, in the first three months.

Tony adds;

‘We have different promotions every week, with customers’ additional voluntary donations contributing to the current Launch and Recovery appeal. We’d like to continue that relationship with Exmouth RNLI beyond the Shannon-class’ arrival, as they will still need donations towards the station’s annual running costs. We strive to play our role in the community to help save lives at sea.’
