Exeter Pirates collect pieces of gold for Exmouth RNLI
A group of pirate enthusiasts went on the rampage on Monday 19 September, fundraising for the RNLI. This was the third Exeter Pirate Day, held appropriately on International Pirate Day.
Organiser of the event, Cap’in Queeg, AKA Mexie Mex, (real name Curt Nicol), had been planning the event for nearly a year through posters, a website and a Facebook group. A list of the 15 venues taking part in the pub crawl were published, along with the times of arrival. The website encouraged interested participants to join them en route, to dress and talk like pirates.
Exmouth RNLI take part in a great mini adventure
On Sunday 18 September, the Jurassic Coast Mini Club were greeted by volunteers of Exmouth RNLI at the boathouse. 70 minis took part in the 2011 “Classic Jurassic” Mouth2Mouth rally between Weymouth and Exmouth to raise money for the RNLI.
The sight of the colourful cars brightened up a somewhat drizzly and overcast day, as they arrived at the station at 3.30pm. The lack of beach goers and parked vehicles on the seafront presented an ideal opportunity for an impromptu photo shoot in front of the lifeboat station.

Exmouth RNLI called out in the night to distressed man on boat, 6 ½ miles out to sea in Lyme Bay.
Brixham Coastguards tasked Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew on Sunday 10th July at 9.28pm – after reports of a distressed man in a Dory boat being hostile with a passing yacht crew.
The American crew on a 72ft yacht reported that the man had initially flagged them down but when they pulled alongside him, he became hostile and began throwing things at them. They pulled away quickly and reported this to Brixham Coastguards and the all weather lifeboat Margaret Jean was launched from Exmouth.
Giles White, Deputy Coxswain said: “Because we had reports that the man was apparently threatening to self harm, we took along two policeman with us.”
Kite Surfer Call-Out
Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew were tasked at 8.40pm on Sunday 11th June, to a kite surfer who had become entangled in his ropes. Brixham Coastguard received two calls from concerned members of the public that had witnessed the man in difficulties.
RNLI Commendation
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has formally recognised the efforts of all involved in the recent rescue of two girls from the sea at Dawlish by sending letters of commendation to, not only the Exmouth RNLI volunteer crew, but the young girl who kept her friend afloat and the two young men on shore that helped by throwing in floatation aids.
Five rowers saved
Five rowers were plucked from cold waters by Exmouth RNLI and Coastguard Helicopter.

With Christmas only three months away, Alan Salsbury, an author and RNLI speaker based near Newton Abbot, is hoping people will be tempted to get a signed copy of his latest book ‘A History of Exmouth Lifeboats – Across the Bar.’ He will be attending a special book signing in WH Smith, Exmouth on Saturday 25th September from 2-4pm.
Live Launch after Opening
After a successful Opening Ceremony at Exmouth RNLI, and one in which the all weather Lifeboat was rededicated and blessed by Reverend Stephen Hoyle, both lifeboats were launched to give the guests a demonstration of a mock ‘rescue’. Just minutes after they finished and were heading back up the ramp the pagers went off for real and the visitors watched as the crew sprang into action.
